There is a good weekly local market every Friday plus an occasional Sunday, and night markets in the summer. In January there is a weekly truffle market. On the road to Périgord is a walnut oil producer – a must for summer salads. And there is a market on every day of the week somewhere in the region; the local one in Vergt is on Fridays. The nearby village of St Amand De Vergt has a lovely music festival in August, held in an ancient little church. With all this on hand, you can feast at every meal in the garden at the tower. Several vineyards offer free tastings. The white and rosé sauvignon wines of Bergerac make delightful summer drinking and are available at markets and the local supermarkets. Château de Montbazillac perched above Bergerac is not only an interesting castle but produces the famous monbazillac dessert wine that accompanies foie gras so perfectly. Saussignac is another similar sweet wine, slightly less expensive, Further to the west are the famous vineyards of St Emilion and beyond that the world famous wines of Bordeaux. But its position, its architectural style, the crossbow holes under its windows and the curious stone bench in the wall, it is possible that it was used as a watchtower, either at the end of the Hundred Years War or during the religious wars in the area. Another theory is that it was provided as a refuge for pilgrims on their way to Compostella by the Knights Templar who controlled the area. Only the beautiful lattice windows and the roof with chestnut beams in the original style of the area were already restored. It is halfway between the historic cities of Périgueux and Bergerac, and is 8km from the thriving market town of Vergt which is the region’s strawberry-growing capital. The exact address will be provided when booked. Nearest airports: Bergerac (about 35 minutes’ drive), and Bordeaux (about 1½ hour’s drive). Nearest Railways: Bergerac (about 30 minutes’ drive), and Périgueux (about 30 mins drive). Car hire available at both railway stations. Driving: Car hire is available at both airports. Inside, the dining area has a table, two comfortable chairs and an original stone seat built into the wall with hand-carvings by a local mason. In the shed next to the tower there is a tiny freezer and a washing machine. The kitchen is well equipped for people who enjoy cooking. There is also a big gas BBQ. Listen to the church bell ringing through the open window, in the distance every morning, midday and evening. The large prairie is kept purposefully wild as it is a stunning example of chalk land meadow with many species of orchid in the early summer and wild herbs such as marjoram and pennyroyal later in the year.
