Wine and cheeseSt Mayme is just north of a tiny appellation called Pécharment which produces wines that are smoother than the harder red wines of Bergerac.

However there are some very good winegrowers in the area, and it has to be said that Bergerac wines do accompany the regional dishes extremely well. 

The Bergerac region also produces some excellent rosé and white wines as well as sweet moelleux and liquoreux wines. 

You can visit the beautiful chateau de Montbazillac outside Bergerac and taste its luscious dessert wine afterwards. 

The Bordeaux region is not far away and a trip to the vineyards around St Emilion (which also has some superb restaurants) makes a pleasant half-day outing. A longer outing can be made to the world-famous vinyards to the west of Bordeaux itself.

South of the Dordogne river are plenty more vineyards, around Duras, Sigoulas, or further west in the Côtes de Bordeaux, for example.
