Shops & Markets

StreetShops and markets

St Mayme has no shops, but it does have a bar/restaurant within easy walking distance of the tower.

However, the local town of Vergt (6 minutes by car) is well served, with two small but adequate supermarkets, petrol station, several good boucherie/charcuteries, some excellent boulangeries and patissiers, two old-fashioned ironmongers, post office, banks with cash machines, tourist office, doctor, chemists, paper shop, and so on.  There is a good weekly market every Friday and occasional extra Sunday markets and night markets in the summer.

For larger supermarkets and a greater variety of shops, we favour Perigueux, which has a lovely old pedestrianised centre with interesting shops and restaurants. In the winter there is the marché au gras and truffle markets but there are excellent regular markets twice a week throughout the year.

Bergerac also has a fine historic centre with good shops and restaurants and markets, though is more affected by tourism in the summer. And for the serious shopper, a day-trip to Bordeaux will lighten your wallet nicely. All have cinemas if you want to improve your French. To the north, Limoges has many factory shops selling porcelain. The Dordogne region is renowned for its colourful markets and you can go to a different one each day of the week.  A list will be provided in the house book at the tower.
